What is coalbed methane?
Methane is the main component of natural gas. Coalbed methane is natural gas that is found in coal seams buried underground. The natural gas is produced by drilling wells into the coal in much the same way as a typical gas well.

Natural gas is one of the cleanest burning fossil fuels. The natural gas produced from CBM is considered to be ‘sweet,’ meaning it has no sour gas (hydrogen sulfide – H2S), thereby reducing health and safety issues associated with its production. Ember’s coalbed methane requires little processing. From the moment it is extracted from coal seams, it is the same as the gas that heats your home.
What’s in a name?
Coalbed methane is also referred to as natural gas from coal, or coalbed gas. Here, we are using the term coalbed methane (CBM). CBM is also known as an “unconventional” source of natural gas, meaning that it comes from a rock formation that is different than the usual reservoir targets for natural gas. CBM requires special well completion, stimulation and production techniques to retrieve the gas.
Ember has CBM resources in excess of 1 tcf.
