How is coalbed methane produced?
Coalbed Methane

Most CBM is stored in the molecular structure of the coal. It is held in place by pressure from the overlying rock and, in many cases, by water circulating through the coal seam. To produce this gas, the pressure in the coal seam needs to be reduced so that the gas can flow through existing fractures to a production well. In some coal formations, pressure is reduced by producing water associated with the coal seams.
Conventional Gas
In contrast, conventional gas is found in spaces that occur naturally within the rock formation. Conventional gas is not attached onto the rock formation, so extraction requires only drilling into that formation and extracting the gas out of the reservoir pores and into the producing well.
The goal of the industry and Ember is to responsibly develop this resource while taking into consideration the social, economic, and environmental impacts of development.
